Taking
Tiger Mountain
[by Strategy].

Giuseppe Attoma Pepe  Senior Design Strategist

Inspired by a Communist Chinese opera entitled Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy, Brian Eno chose this title for his second solo album, in 1974. He explained the title as a representation of “the dichotomy between archaism and modernity. Half ‘Taking Tiger Mountain’ – that medieval physical sensation of storming a military position – and half (By Strategy) – that very, very 20th century intellectual concept of tactical interaction between systems.” For some reason, these words, and of course, Eno’s enchanting music, particularly the song that gives the album its title, have always been a source of conceptual inspiration in my journey as a Design Strategist.

Along the way, I’ve systematically experimented with this dichotomy between “archaism and modernity” and found solutions by inventing lateral approaches, not bothering to adopt disguises and ruses, playing with paradoxes as ammunition.

This site is dedicated to these lateral reflections and aims to share experiences, stories and ideas to help design evolve its role in the landscape of skills called upon to meet the challenges of transforming our world. Stay tuned!

Mapping Urban Mobility

A little background: in early 2012 I had the pleasure of chatting with Loup Cellard, Data Scientist and Digital Humanities researcher, at the time a contributor to the online magazine Strabic. Loup was interested in the evolution of urban cartography, at a time when the Attoma agency had just finalized the UX/UI design of the […]

Information design means making a difference legible

I had the good fortune and great pleasure of collaborating for many years with Groupe Chronos, founded in 1993 and headed until 2015 by sociologist Bruno Marzloff, an illustrious researcher, author and consultant in the fields of mobility and work transformation. With Bruno and his colleagues, including Laurence Sellincourt, Léa Marzloff and Julie Rieg, we […]

Building the city experience

The concept of user experience doesn’t just apply to digital products and services. It is also relevant to the urban spaces in which we evolve on a daily basis, whether in terms of individual or collective experiences. To promote the disciplines of design to its audiences, Réseau Canopé* has created a web series entitled À […]

Learning to doubt: design beyond beliefs

What’s really going on when we think we’re doing “design”? A question that is particularly relevant in today’s context. At a time when the urgent need for social and industrial transformations requires new ways of thinking and approaches, I believe we must also question the meaning behind our practices as designers. What is really going […]

Attoma: simplifying complexity

Here we publish Christophe Chaptal’s interview with Giuseppe Attoma Pepe, published in issue 1242 of the Design Fax newsletter of June 17, 2022 and subsequently on the Admirable Design website. It’s also an opportunity to pay a heartfelt tribute to Jean-Charles Gaté, founder in 1995 of France’s only design newsletter, and to Christophe Chaptal, who […]
